The main purposes of an accessibility assessment are to provide a clearer picture of the accessibility issues facing a website and to help identify priority areas, groups and issues on which resources and action should be targeted. Assessments, and accessibility priorities and objectives, should always be developed in the context of the clients wider objectives and plans for the usage of their website, e.g. listing news articles and stories.

All websites should seek to identify, assess and monitor the accessibility needs of their potential customers through a combination of the use of:

• accessibility mapping and modelling tools (referred to here as mapping audits);
• the clients own knowledge of the site users; and
• questionnaires and consultation with site users and competitor websites.
